A Closer Look at Mohair Tailoring

Lightweight. Resilient. Understated sheen.

A Fabric with Heritage

Mohair has been woven into tailored garments for over a century, prized by tailors for its unique combination of refinement and performance. The fiber is derived from the Angora goat, a breed that traces its origins to the Anatolian region of Turkey.

In classic menswear, mohair tailoring came into its own during the mid-20th century. It became synonymous with elegance and modernity—favored by jazz musicians, actors, and the sharply dressed Mods of 1960's. Its subtle sheen and crisp drape offered something slightly different from wool: cleaner lines, more structure, and a cool touch that worked beautifully in formal or tropical settings.

A Blend of Sharpness and Practicality

Pure mohair can be overly stiff for most tailoring, so we typically prefer mohair/wool blends. These fabrics retain the best of both fibers—mohair’s bounce and structure, wool’s softness and flexibility. The result is a cloth that wears cool, travels well, and holds a crease longer than almost anything else.

You’ll notice it in the jacket’s chest, which keeps it's shape throughout the day, or in the trousers, which resist bagging and wrinkling even after hours of wear. Despite its durability, mohair still feels refined—never heavy or coarse—and it drapes cleanly off the body for an undeniably polished look.

The Mohair Difference

Mohair may not be as ubiquitous as wool, but that’s part of the appeal. It’s a connoisseur’s choice—a fabric that speaks softly but stands out. With proper care, a mohair suit will last for decades, keeping its shape and elegance through the years.

For those seeking tailored clothing that’s sharp, sophisticated, and just a bit unexpected, mohair offers something truly special.
