Touring the Atelier with Il Micio

We traveled to Florence to visit the workshop of one of our favorite leather goods makers.

Comune di Firenze
Hidetaka Fukaya

Hidetaka Fukaya makes some of the finest leather goods in the world. Originally from Nagoya, Japan, Fukaya-san came to Florence to learn shoemaking, but he has maintained a broader passion for design and for leather-working. His brand, Il Micio, balances a small bespoke shoe production with limited runs of creatively designed leather belts and accessories.

The Workshop

The workshop is a tiny space on the ground floor of a small street in Florence. The feel is almost claustrophobic, but incredibly charming. There are no big machines here—just the simple tools of leather artisan. The workspace itself is basically just a small table and chair, but there is also a space for showcasing Fukaya-san’s latest creations.

While Fukaya-san’s craftsmanship is exceptional, what really sets Il Micio apart is the creativity of his designs. The products are unique and thoughtful, and they are always infused with playful experimentation, be it with color, texture, or design. The term Il Micio is Italian for “the cat”, and this is really the perfect spirit animal for what Fukaya-san is doing. Cats are sleek, beautiful, and elegant, but fiercely independent, just like Il Micio. The products are for those who want something well-made and beautiful, but different.

Il Micio for The Armoury

Our new IL Micio reversible tote was designed for daily carry.  It features a signature lining and two riveted pockets that are the perfect size for a day out.

Our new belts are made up in one of Fukuya-san's favorite leathers, Vachetta, a premium cowhide.
